Local musicians make a big impact at the MN State Fair

A big shout to all musicians from near and far who performed at the MN State Fair.  In 12 days, guests experienced over 900 shows that took place on 5 stages and the Grandstand.  In addition, many vendors feature live entertainment in their space, i.e. The Hangar.

I believe the headline news story is how many local musicians graced the stages and greatly contributed to the memorable experiences had by 1.9 million guests who came to the  2023 Great Minnesota Get Together.  These local musicians are saluted for their contribution to celebration of culture and community.  We saw you and salute your contribution to music and art, which is essential to human survival and development.  

A big thanks to everyone that showed love for the hard-working musicians who makes our MN State Fair the Great MN Get Together.  Please join @KZMOHD and @OMGStudiosTC by supporting real music, by real musicians.

Get To Know Sibling-Group Nunnabove Opening For Chaka Khan and Boyz II Men In This Interview From The Minnesota State Fair

NUNNABOVE has been called the “next generation of the Minneapolis sound” and was featured on Season 13 of “America’s Got Talent.” NUNNABOVE is Cadence, Mattie, Bennett and Wisdom, four siblings from the Twin Cities. They take their influences from funk, jazz, rock, neo-soul and Midwest-emo to generate their own sound and style from The Purple One to the Gloved One, The 1975 to Chaka Khan. For these siblings, family is life and the key to what they create musically. As a featured artist at Celebration 2023 at Paisley Park, the group “shined the brightest” as one of the five most memorable moments. As Matthew Allen of TheGrio writes, “The Minneapolis Sound seems to be in good hands.” The band has shared the stage with the three-time Grammy Award-winning Sounds of Blackness, PJ Morton of Maroon 5, Stokley, and many others.

The Juneteenth Story From Galveston, Texas to Minnesota, is a six-episode docufilm, filmed on the Island of Galveston and in Saint Paul, Minnesota, telling the story of Juneteenth, where it originated, from historians and descendants of enslaved persons transported to the Island during the transatlantic slave trade between 1816 and 1836. The story connects the significance of making Juneteenth a state holiday in Minnesota. The six- episode docufilm will be edited to a 30-minute film for television and streamingbroadcastsand made available tocommunity organizations to host pre-release screenings the week of June 12th. The film will air on SPNN and SpeakMPLS locally at 9:00am on June 19th and in Houston and Galveston, Texas (see local listings.) The full episodic docufilm will be available online at kzmohd.com on June 19th.

MN Humanities Presents Juneteenth Brunch Featuring Dr. Bernice A. King

Juneteenth (June 19) is the federal and Minnesota-state holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of all enslaved African Americans in 1865. Juneteenth Brunch, It Starts With Me: Cultivating A Beloved Community Mindset, is a community brunch and conversation featuring Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King and CEO of The King Center. Dr. Bernice A. King offers a fresh perspective on where we go from here and how we overcome ever-present inequities and injustices in our world house.

Space is limited. Guest registration includes brunch and a copy of Dr. King’s new children’s book “It Starts With Me.”

About Morris Hayes

I got my big break in 1991 when Jerome Benton asked me to play keyboards with Morris Day & The Time following the departure of Jimmy “Jam” Harris. They were big shoes to fill, but they were happy with my contributions, and later that year, I toured Asia with them.

At the end of the tour, I co-formed a band called “G Sharp & The Edge,” which became the house band for Prince’s new nightclub, “Glam Slam” in Minneapolis. Prince was so impressed that he asked the band to play with Carmen Electra as the opening act for his 1992 “Diamonds and Pearls” world tour. 

After the tour, Prince asked me to play keys alongside Tommy Barbarella in his band “The New Power Generation.” I would go on to be in the band for nearly 20 years and a number of years as Prince’s Musical Director. (There were some Prince tours that I did not play on as I was also touring with Maceo Parker.)

 Georgia Duder-Wood is a singer, actor and vocal artist with two decades of performance experience. She’s worked in international musical theatre, had longstanding musical residencies in jazz and soul, worked as a guest artist in cabaret and concerts, and is a specialist singer for recording and session work.

Georgia’s written a song in tribute to Prince, called ‘Purple One (There will Never B)’, which has been recorded by her new jazz/funk band Regroovination.
